Vedanta Aluminium Expands Skill Development Network to Build Local Workforce Pipeline

For Vedanta Aluminium, this initiative is not only a community development effort but also a long-term investment in building a skilled, employable workforce in regions close to its operations.

Vedanta Aluminium is strengthening its local talent ecosystem through a large-scale skill development initiative in Kalahandi, Odisha, aimed at bridging the employability gap in semi-urban and rural India. The programme, run in partnership with the Odisha Skill Development Authority (OSDA) and NABARD, has trained over 800 youth so far, with a placement rate of 75%.

Positioned as part of Vedanta’s broader talent localisation and social impact strategy, the initiative focuses on building a skilled workforce for the services and light manufacturing sectors. The training modules are industry-aligned, covering hospitality, retail, and food services — sectors with high employment absorption. With 55% of participants being women, the programme also supports gender inclusion in formal employment.

The company’s Bhawanipatna and Lanjigarh centres function as feeder institutions, connecting trained candidates with employers across India. The 22nd batch of the Food and Beverage course recently recorded 100% placement, with recruits joining firms such as Sodexo, Club Mahindra, AVN Group, and Asmita Holidays.

According to Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, CEO of Vedanta Alumina Business, the initiative forms “a critical part of Vedanta Aluminium’s effort to develop sustainable local value chains and reduce regional economic disparities by enabling job-ready youth from aspirational districts like Kalahandi.”

For Vedanta Aluminium, this initiative is not only a community development effort but also a long-term investment in building a skilled, employable workforce in regions close to its operations. The programme supports India’s larger skilling and rural employability agenda and aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to decent work and economic growth.

The company plans to expand its training network by introducing new vocational streams, strengthening partnerships with industry bodies, and scaling placement linkages across the services and manufacturing value chains.
