Piyush Pandey, Father of Indian Advertising, Passes Away at 70; Leaders Pay Tribute

Pandey's illustrious career spanned over four decades, during which he served as the Executive Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Worldwide at Ogilvy.

Piyush Pandey, the visionary behind some of India's most iconic advertising campaigns, passed away on October 24, 2025, at the age of 70. He had been battling an infection that took a serious turn. Pandey's illustrious career spanned over four decades, during which he served as the Executive Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Worldwide at Ogilvy. He was instrumental in transforming Indian advertising by infusing it with local language, culture, and emotions. 

His campaigns, including Fevicol's "Bus stuck with Fevicol," Cadbury's "Kuch Khaas Hai," and Asian Paints' "Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai," became cultural touchstones.

Beyond his commercial success, Pandey played a pivotal role in political branding, notably crafting the slogan "Ab Ki Baar Modi Sarkar," which became a defining element of the BJP's 2014 election campaign. His work resonated deeply with Indian audiences, blending creativity with cultural nuances.

Tributes have poured in from various quarters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his admiration for Pandey's creativity, stating, "Shri Piyush Pandey Ji was admired for his creativity. He made a monumental contribution to the world of advertising and communications. I will fondly cherish our interactions over the years. Saddened by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, remembered Pandey for his infectious spirit, saying, "Yes, he was a man who left gigantic footprints on the ad industry..."

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman hailed Pandey as a "titan and legend of Indian advertising," acknowledging his transformative influence on communication in the country.

Pandey's legacy is not just in the campaigns he created but in the way he reshaped the advertising landscape, making it more relatable and reflective of India's diverse culture. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian advertising, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
